Certificate of Insurance Requests

Certificates of Insurance (COI) are required when proof of insurance is requested. See a sample COI here.

There are two types of requests: an outside or third party requesting proof that Rice University is insured or Rice University requesting proof of insurance from a third party or contractor.

  • Outside or third-party requests:
  • You may need to submit a certificate of insurance request to Risk Management when:
  • You attend a conference and have agreed to sponsor a booth in an exhibition hall
  • A research agreement contains an insurance clause requiring Rice to provide a certificate or proof of insurance.
  • You lease a vehicle.
  • You are renting space from a facility in Houston or out of town, such as a restaurant, conference room, museum space, stadium, or athletic event.
  • You lease a piece of equipment for a short or long term, e.g., a copier
  • A piece of equipment is loaned to you

To request certificates of insurance, please use the Certificate of Insurance Request Form (coming soon).

Please allow three business days for certificate processing.

For all third-party or contractor COIs, please review the sample COI based on Rice’s standard insurance requirements. Note that if insurance requirements are within the contract, those requirements should be used for comparison. Once reviewed, please save the COI in your contract file. If you have any questions, please e-mail riskmanagement@rice.edu. Please allow three business days for a response.
